School Summary:
Our school vision is E mālama ‘ia ana ka mauli ola o kākou mai kēlā hanauna a i kēia hanauna. Our spirit of being is nurtured from one generation to the next. We are honored to carry the name of Samuel Mānaiakalani Kamakau (1815-1876), who was a noted Native Hawaiian scholar, genealogist, historian, teacher, and legislator renown for chronicling the traditional culture and history of our people. His life symbolizes integral qualities that we as contemporary Native Hawaiians can aspire to: his life-long love of learning, his deep knowledge of culture and history, and his untiring quest to perpetuate the past for future generations. Established in Kailua in 2000 by our founder Makalapua Alencastre, we are a K-12 Hawaiian language immersion, laboratory, charter school currently located at the Kokokahi YWCA campus in Kāne‘ohe. We plan to transition to our beautiful new campus in Ha‘ikū for school year 2011-12. Our school is a safe refuge for our community, where our language, our spirituality, our culturally appropriate behaviors and our traditional knowledge are nurtured and perpetuated. We aspire to serve as a model for our nation, for our children and our cherished elders. If youʻre interested in helping make our vision come to fruition, please contact the ke‘ena a`o for more information.
