National Board Certification
Based on the idea that great schools begin with great teachers, the National Board for Teaching Standards has establish professional standards that define what an accomplished teacher should know and be able to do. By achieving national board certification a teacher demonstrates that he or she has met these professional standards.Â
Twenty-four certificate areas are defined. Some areas are defined by subject or discipline and include art, career and technical education, counseling, English as a new language, language arts, music, science, and social studies. Other areas are defined by student age group.

- In Hawai'i a reimbursement of up to $3000 for expeses related to the certification process is available on a competative basis to any teacher.

Candidates for certification must hold a bachelor's degree, three full years experience as a teacher or counselor, and a valid license for that period of time.
