Washington, D.C. – Topping the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools' list of districts served by charter schools is New Orleans, where 61 percent of public school students attend charter schools. Decimated by Hurricane Katrina, the city took the unprecedented opportunity to rebuild the public education system with charter schools as the foundation.

Kamaile Academy's board says the move was needed to qualify for federal funding

 

The governing board of a public charter school in Waianae has fired its top two administrators as part of a dramatic transformation bid to turn around the low-performing school.

Kamaile Academy Chief Executive Officer Glen Kila and Principal Clarence De Lude were dismissed last week by the board but are staying on during a transition period.

OHA approves $1.5M grant for Hawaii-focused public charter schools

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - For the second consecutive year, the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs approved a $1.5 million grant to 17 Native Hawaiian-focused public charter schools.

OHA says the grant will be used for the 2010-2011 school year to address the budget shortfalls schools will experience.

According to 2009 charter school enrollment figures, 3,600 students were enrolled in the 17 Native Hawaiian-focused public charter schools. Nearly 80 percent of those students are Native Hawaiian.
